One of the most popular offerings at Precious Metal Arts is our small group shared tutoring.
Limited to a maximum of 6 students, the four hour sessions are offered 2 -3 times per week, and give you a truly unique opportunity to learn the techniques YOU choose at your own pace. As far as we know, we are the ONLY jewelry studio to offer this special way to explore your creativity.
How does it work?
Unlike a class, students in shared tutoring work individually on projects of their own. This means that you are expected to have some idea of your creative mission and will need to bring your own materials. All the basic tools are provided at the bench.
Alternatively, tutoring students may decide to follow any of the basic class projects from our metalsmithing, wax, or stone setting classes. In this case, a kit of the necessary practice materials can be purchased at your first session for $50.00.
What should I expect?
During your first tutoring session, you will be asked to complete a "tool check"; this is a process by which you identify and locate all of the tools that are provided in your jeweler's bench.
Once that is complete, you will most likely be given a brief introduction to whatever medium you have chosen to pursue, and then provided with some basic practice techniques to get started. This is where having taken a weekend class can really jump start your progress, as you would already have a comfort level with the tools and materials.
In subsequent sessions, students use the first hour to work with minimal assistance to prepare their projects and "settle in" before the remaining 3 hours of intensive tutoring begin.
Please keep in mind that if you have chosen to explore more advanced techniques without previous experience, you may have to complete some practice projects in wax or non-precious metal to bring you up to speed before moving on.
Shared small group tutoring is a great way for couples to make their own wedding rings! You may choose to come together and collaborate side by side, or schedule separate sessions to work independently. Either way, we make sure that the experience is as memorable as the result. You may want to schedule an appointment to meet and go over your ideas before your first session so that you can be prepared to dive right in. Students should plan on a minimum of two sessions to complete a simple wax model for a band design, and an additional session if you want to do the finishing and polishing yourself.
Due to extremely limited space in our small group tutoring, we enforce a strict cancellation policy. We must receive notice by phone 72 hours before your scheduled session to prevent the forfeit of your payment.
